When Natalie Chanin returned home in 2000, she was planning a fashion-based project that would include artisans from her hometown, Florence, Alabama. She didn’t realize  that those first few garments were to lead her on a journey where thread, market, home, hope, determination and craftsmanship would merge. Hers is a story of going home, and by going home, finding a connection to the world. It is a story about a connection that bridges her small community and the story of stitches on cotton jersey with the global economy, the marketplace at large and lessons about sustaining community and craft. The story of Alabama Chanin is a visual one, with highlights of southern gardens, farmers, ladies and gentlemen—who are the foundation of the company she has created—stores, stories, colors and thread.

About Natalie Chanin

Natalie “Alabama” Chanin is owner and designer of the American couture line Alabama Chanin and author of Alabama Stitch Book (STC – February 2008), Alabama Studio Style (STC – March 2010) and the upcoming Alabama Studio Design (STC – Spring 2012). In 2010, Natalie was chosen as one of the designers for Cooper Hewitt Global Triennial – “Why Design Now?”.

Natalie has a Degree in Environmental Design from North Carolina State University and travels the world to lecture on slow design, sustainability, and cultural preservation.
