It will become the new ethos of the 21st century (after last century’s modernism), shaping everything from design and business, to food, housing and community. Sustainism is about connectedness, localism and sustainable living. Sustainist culture has its distinct style and forms. It is also the culture of sharing, exchange and open source. The Etsy community reflects all of that. Our idea of sustainism —and the visual symbols we designed for the new era— puts creative business and design centre-stage. The future is sustainist. Michiel Schwarz and Joost Elffers are the authors/creators of the recently published Sustainism Is the New Modernism: A Cultural Manifesto for the Sustainist Era. In aphorisms and visual symbols they present the features of a new era — a cultural vision for the future, which the International Herald Tribune called “A New Ethos for Design”. Michiel Schwarz is a Dutch cultural thinker, innovator and producer. Since completing a PhD in the sociology of technology (University of London), he has worked as a cultural advisor and he has initiated a wide range of projects on global issues, the future of design, technology, media culture and creative innovation. His publications include The Technological Culture and Speed: Visions of an Accelerated Age. He is based in Amsterdam, after a recent period in Berkeley, California.
